ABOUT ABOUT

We are so thrilled to be partnering with Ange Branca for our sixth Sanctuary Supper!* Ange has made a name for herself as one of Philadelphia Magazine’s “women pioneers” who are “reclaiming the industry with pure talent and sheer ingenuity.” At Saté Kampar, she cooks Malaysian food (sizzling skewers grilled over coconut shells, nasi lemak bungkus, and rendang daging, for example) as her grandmother taught her, and has a James Beard Award for it. Ange has her own Muhibbah dinners to celebrate diversity and to support related nonprofits.

Southeast by Southeast at 8th and Snyder is an initiative of the Porch Light program, a joint collaboration between Mural Arts Philadelphia and the City of Philadelphia's Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services. It is a hub space for classes and activities to connect immigrant and refugee neighbors to the community and social services. Since 2011, under the skilled and compassionate direction of Melissa Fogg, SExSE has been a safe zone for the Burmese and Bhutanese refugee communities to combat feelings of isolation, learn English, develop creative skills, and come for after-school help. Melissa will tell us more about special needs of the community, as well as the many services and projects emanating from the small space she manages.

*Sanctuary Suppers are lively communal meals with opportunities to connect with new people and hear stories from across our diverse community in this nation of immigrants. We hope you'll leave better informed and more involved. Our mission is to change the conversation around immigration, increasing public awareness and support of documented and undocumented immigrants through education and action, with the long-term goal of effecting policy changes—and we hope you'll join us.
